The Challenge

African insurers sit at vastly different points on the ESG journey; some are only beginning to think about it, others are already implementing full sustainability strategies. FSD Africa, as secretariat of the Nairobi Declaration on Sustainable Insurance (NDSI), needed an ESG advisory partner able to work across that entire spread — building foundational knowledge for insurers just starting, while delivering hands-on technical assistance to those ready to embed ESG into their core business.

Our Approach

Lybra is delivering that mandate, jointly with Zamara Actuaries, Administrators & Consultants Limited, across four connected workstreams — from foundational knowledge-building to bespoke technical assistance, strategic communications, and ongoing monitoring.

Foundational Knowledge

Structured learning content and toolkits, plus a compendium of ESG case studies, for early-stage NDSI members.

Technical Assistance

Bespoke ESG strategy and sustainability-linked product design for 11 African insurers, including parametric drought cover and gender-focused agricultural insurance.

Strategic Communications

Supporting NDSI’s own visibility and communications as a sector-wide platform.

Monitoring & Advisory

Ongoing tracking of insurer progress against agreed milestones and KPIs.

The assignment is ongoing and reflects the range a sector-wide mandate like this demands: strategy work, product design, capacity building, and communications, held together by one team.
