Overview

Nature underpins economic activity, yet many organisations are only beginning to understand how their dependencies and impacts on ecosystems translate into business and financial risks and opportunities. In Kenya, this challenge is particularly significant given the importance of nature-dependent sectors to the economy and financial institutions’ exposure through the activities they finance.

Lybra has worked on complementary initiatives for WWF-Kenya and UNDP to help strengthen the market’s ability to identify, assess, manage and disclose nature-related issues.

The work has included building capacity on the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD), covering nature-related dependencies, impacts, risks, and opportunities; the Locate, Evaluate, Assess and Prepare (LEAP) approach; disclosure recommendations; scenario analysis; metrics and targets; and practical steps organisations can take to begin integrating nature into decision-making.

To translate these concepts into practice, Lybra developed locally relevant case studies examining how organisations in the financial and real-economy sectors are integrating nature considerations into governance, strategy, risk management, financing, operations and disclosure. The work was complemented by the development of a locally adapted Nature-related Reporting Adoption Tracking and Reporting Tool, designed to help Kenyan businesses and financial institutions assess and track their progress towards nature-aligned practices.

Together, these engagements connect organisational action with wider market readiness – from building knowledge and providing practical tools to understanding the policy, institutional and data conditions required to scale nature-related disclosure.

The work shows how organisations can move beyond viewing nature primarily as an environmental issue and begin understanding how nature-related dependencies, impacts, risks, and opportunities influence strategy, risk, investment, and long-term value.
